SUMMARY:PPA TEC Color of Steam and Color of Water
DESCRIPTION:This six-hour class is designed for all levels of technician. Part A of the class is called the Color of Steam and covers fundamental principles of steam heating. Most steam heating problems can be corrected or prevented by understanding these principles. Part B is called the Color of Water – Hydronic Systems and identifies the key differences between traditional mid-efficiency boilers and new high-efficiency boilers. All major components of a hydronic system will be discussed as well as sizing of the boiler\, circulator and piping. Part C is called Ignition Control Wiring and has plenty of opportunity for hands-on experience with live-fire equipment in the PPA lab and the Peerless Live-Fire trailer. \nColor of Steam: \n• 15 Basic Rules of Steam Systems \n• Steam Boiler Sizing\, Radiator Sizing Charts\, Square Ft of Steam vs BTUs \n• Knocking out Water Hammer – Steam Velocity\, Pipe Pitch \n•  Near Boiler Piping\, Hartford Loop\, Swing Joints\, Dimension A\, Drop Headers \n• Clean\, Dry Steam from Boiler Skimming \n• Pressuretrols\, Vaporstats\, Low Water CutOffs \n• Condensate Receiver Tanks vs Boiler Feed Systems \n• Wiring Boilers and Accessories \n• One-Pipe vs Two-Pipe\, Vents and Traps \nColor of Water 2.0: \n• Simple “Must Do” Tips for Near Boiler Piping \n• Death by Short-Cycle – Why Boiler Oversizing Really Matters \n• Quick & Dirty Heat Load Sizing – Bring a Pencil – It’s Simple \n• Can I Get 100\,000 BTUs Through 3⁄4” Pipe? We’ll Look at the Charts and See \n• Why Do I Need Primary/Secondary Piping? What’s a Buffer Tank? Pipe for Flow \n• One Size Fits All – Will the Circulator Move the Water? Remember – Flow & Head \n• What Else Do I Need? Expansion Tank\, Check Valves\, Air Eliminators\, Ball Valves \n• Is an Indirect Water Heater a Good Investment? Will the Savings Beat the Cost? \nRegistration includes lunch. \nOur Instructor: \nGerry Hogan has been Director of Product Training at PB Heat\, LLC for seventeen years and has been designing and delivering various technical training on subjects of combustion\, venting\, hydronic and steam piping\, wiring and controls for eighteen years. Class styles have covered technical theory in classroom settings of up to 75 technicians and engineers as well as practical hands-on training with hydronic and steam boilers with burners of various types of fuels. The latest class offerings are certified by NATE (North American Technician Excellence) for continuing education of HVAC\, plumbing and heating technicians and NORA (National Oilheat Research Alliance) for heating professional training certification. \nGerry designed and built a training laboratory with six live-fire boilers of up to 1mm BTUH capacity as well as a connected heating and cooling system for the training center and engineering laboratory. He has also designed and built two mobile training classrooms on trailers of 14′ and 28’ length that have up to six live-fire boilers. The trailer is completely self-sufficient with its own heating\, cooling and power generator. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Item Name\nExpires\nPricing\n\n\n\n\nMember Price – Discounted price is for PPA members and PPATEC members.\nSep 16\, 2025\n\n\n$185.00\n\n\n\nNon-Member Ticket – Full ticket price is for non PPA or PPATEC members\nSep 16\, 2025\n\n\n$220.00\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
