Course Overview 

This comprehensive course provides students with the essential knowledge and hands-on skills needed to diagnose, troubleshoot, and service hydronic heating systems. Students will learn systematic approaches to identifying problems in boilers, pumps, piping networks, and control systems while developing practical repair and maintenance techniques used in residential applications. 

Course Objectives 

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 

  • Analyze hydronic system components and understand their operational principles 
  • Perform systematic troubleshooting procedures using proper diagnostic tools and techniques 
  • Identify and resolve common problems in boilers, pumps, expansion tanks, and distribution systems 
  • Interpret system pressures, temperatures, and flow rates to diagnose performance issues 

Course Content 

Module 1: Hydronic System Fundamentals 

  • Heat transfer principles and fluid dynamics 
  • System types: one-pipe, two-pipe, and primary-secondary systems 
  • Boiler types and operation (gas, oil, electric, condensing) 
  • Overview of Pump selection and operation principles 
  • Expansion tanks and pressure relief systems 

Module 2: Diagnostic Tools and Techniques 

  • Digital multimeters and combustion analyzers 
  • Pressure gauges and manometers 

Module 3: Boiler Troubleshooting and Service 

  • Combustion problems and efficiency issues 
  • Burner adjustment and flame analysis 
  • Venting system problems and solutions 
  • Safety control testing and replacement 

Module 5: Circulation System Diagnosis 

  • Pump performance evaluation and repair 
  • Air elimination and bleeding procedures 
  • Pipe sizing and flow distribution problems 
  • Zone control valve operation and service 

Prerequisites 

  • Basic understanding of heating systems 
  • Fundamental electrical knowledge 
  • Ability to use hand tools and measuring instruments 

Assessment Methods 

  • Practical demonstrations of diagnostic techniques 
  • Laboratory exercises on actual hydronic equipment
