10-Week HVAC & Energy Professional Program – With The PPATEC Training Center – Middleton, PA

The Pennsylvania Petroleum Association Technical Education Center (PPATEC) is excited to announce a new workforce development initiative called the 10-Week HVAC & Energy Professional Program. This gateway program was created to recruit and train new individuals into our industry. PPA and PPATEC members who hire entry level field technicians will now have the option of enrolling those attendees into our formalized training program. Attendees of this 10-week program will receive basic hands-on training for electrical, air conditioning, heating technologies, and propane systems. Attendees will also receive valuable industry certifications such as EPA 608, NORA, and CETP.

Week 1: Basic Electric Theory for HVAC Components (40 Hours)

Students who complete this course successfully will progressively be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the Basic Electric Theory for HVAC Components, What is Electricity, Ohm’s Law, and other theory
• Properly troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, maintain, and service popular brands of A/C units and heat pumps
• Perform installation and maintenance on system components including: Circuit & Components, Conductors, Transformers, Thermostats, Motors, Other electrical components with minimal supervision
• Demonstrate grounding in the fundamentals of HVAC electrical components
• Properly perform assigned duties demonstrating proper safety practices and procedures in the lab and the workplace, while installing, designing, troubleshooting, and servicing systems
• Maintain a safe and OSHA compliant work environment
• Multitask and prioritize all duties and responsibilities in order of importance.
Week 2 – 5: Heating Principles, Theories, Installation & Troubleshooting (160 Hours)

Students who complete this course successfully will progressively be able to:

• Explain, identify, and execute nozzle construction and flame patterns
• Explain, identify, and execute combustion chamber sizing, draft adjustments and regulating draft with chimneys and power venters
• Explain, identify, and execute combustion theory, efficiency testing and troubleshooting
• Explain and identify causes of carbon monoxide, smoke and soot
• Explain and identify how ignition systems work; install and troubleshoot ignition systems
• Explain how motors, fans, & couplings work; install and troubleshoot motors, fans, & couplings
• Explain how primary controls, limit controls, & thermostats work, function and are installed
• Explain outdoor reset theory & terminology
• Explain heating systems, heat loss, detecting heat loss, renewable energy types and how they work
• Explain preventative maintenance and service procedures; perform preventative maintenance and service procedures
• Properly troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, maintain and service popular brands of oil burners and equipment
• Perform installation and maintenance on hydronic boilers, forced air furnaces and related piping and/or ventilation systems with minimal supervision
• Demonstrate a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of heating system design, installation, operation and analysis
• Properly Perform an Oil to Gas Conversion
• Understand how to size and install Gas Piping, Gas Regulators, and Gas Valves
• Understand how to size, install, and maintain Gas Orifice’s, Diffusers, and Combustion Chambers
• Understand, how to perform, and adjust Combustion, Draft, and Venting
• Understand the operation and how to diagnose Ignition Systems, Primary Controls, Modules, Limited Controls, and Motors
Week 6 – 8: Gas/Propane Certification & Vapor Distribution Systems (120 Hours)

Students who complete this course successfully will receive basic training, certification, and an evaluated skills assessment on the following:

• CETP 1.0 Propane Basic Principles and Practices of Propane
• CETP 4.1 Propane Designing and Installing Exterior Vapor Distributions Systems
• CETP 4.2 Propane Placing Vapor Distribution Systems and Appliances into Operation
• CETP 4.3 Propane Installing Appliances and Interior Vapor Distribution Systems
Week 9 – 10: AC Principles, Theories, Installation & Troubleshooting (80 Hours)

Students who complete this course successfully will progressively be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the History and Chemistry of Refrigerant
• Properly troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, maintain and service popular brands of A/C units and heat pumps
• Perform installation and maintenance on system components including: Compressors, Evaporators, Condensers, Metering Devices, Line sets, and Filter Driers with minimal supervision
• Properly perform assigned duties demonstrating proper safety practices and procedures in the lab and the workplace, while installing, designing, troubleshooting and servicing systems
• Maintain a safe and OSHA compliant work environment
• Multitask and prioritize all duties and responsibilities in order of importance
• Earn EPA 608 Certification
